Keep Your Home Secure Against Holiday Burglaries

The holiday season is a time for great joy, but unfortunately it's also is a time when crime increases, as there are just too many temptations abound.

People leave their homes for the holiday. Gifts are being bought and stored in the house, and afterwards, those new gifts fill homes. Of course there are some things you can do to protect yourself from the unthinkable, and ensure you have a happy season of joy.

Read on for tips on keeping your home safe and secure against holiday burglaries

  • Keep doors locked. This goes without saying, but making certain your home is completely locked and secure is the easiest way to prevent break-ins. Doors, windows, and your garage all should be secured against easy access.

  • Check your garage for entry points. Garage doors are notoriously one part of your home that can make it easy for an intruder to enter. Don’t keep your garage door opener in the car, even if you lock it, and make certain to not store gifts in the garage. Always use a deadbolt lock to secure the door into your house from the garage as well.
  • Show occupancy. Burglars are more likely to target a home if they think there is no chance of someone being home. Have a friend, neighbor, or relative park in the driveway occasionally, turning your lights on and off at different times of the day, or better yet, setting lights to timers and shifting the lights around to come on in different rooms in the house are all great measures to deter burglars. Just don’t allow your house to be dark for too long, as that is a surefire way to attract a burglar.

  • Discard wisely. Never discard the boxes of those expensive items you just brought into your home outside your house. Break down the boxes and load them into the car and take them to a place you can discard or recycle. You never want to advertise all the expensive items you have inside your home.
  • Conceal gifts. Don’t place holiday gifts around the tree or where people can see them from a window. If others can see gifts from outside, it may be tempting to burglarize your home. Keep decorations to just the decorations, and keep the wrapped gifts out of sight until the big day.
  • Be social media safe. If you are away during the holidays or bringing expensive gifts into the home, be safe on social media and don’t post about being far away on that fantastic holiday vacation while you are away or inside your home. Postings like this are a welcome invitation for burglars to target your home, so be safe and wait until posting those vacation pics and selfies when you have returned home, and no posting of those expensive gifts.
